Violence against women, including femicide-the killing of women due to their gender-continues to plague societies worldwide. November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, honors the Mirabal sisters, who were murdered in 1960 for opposing a dictatorship. Their story remains tragically relevant as countless women face violence today.
Femicide, alongside domestic abuse, sexual violence, human trafficking, and harmful cultural practices, devastates not only women but also society. Children, often the hidden victims, lose their mothers to violence, leaving them orphaned, homeless, and traumatized. Perpetrators rarely take responsibility for these children, who end up in rescue centers or on the streets.
St. Ignatius Orthodox Child Rescue and Mission Center for instance, provides safe havens, offering shelter, education, and emotional support to these children. However, we need community support to continue with our work.
Ending violence requires collective action: raising awareness, empowering women and children, strengthening laws against perpetrators, and supporting rescue centers. By addressing the root causes of violence and providing care for affected children, we can foster a safer, more equitable society.
Together, let’s break the cycle, support survivors, and invest in a brighter future for all.
